National Band Association announces 2020 Programs of Excellence

The National Band Association recently announced its division winners of the 2020 Programs of Excellence Blue Ribbon Award. West Salem High School’s band program, led by Todd Zimbelman and Ashley Alexander, was recognized as the Northwestern division winner for 2020. The band association selected programs out of submissions from states that included Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.

Awarded annually, the Programs of Excellence Blue Ribbon Awards highlights exemplary high school band programs from across the nation.

For consideration, schools must submit an extensive portfolio encompassing examples from multiple years of all ensembles, sample programs demonstrating breadth of repertoire, data highlighting performance accolades both for the program ensembles as well as individual student achievement.

“This award is truly an incredible honor,” said Salem-Keizer Public Schools Coordinator of Music and Drama Stephen Lytle. “The dedication the program at West Salem High School has in supporting the lifelong success of our area’s musicians is so critical to our district’s vision. I am proud to have West Salem High School recognized for this honor, representing Salem-Keizer Public Schools.”

West Salem High School’s band program will now be entered into the running for the national award to be announced by the National Band Association in December.

“We are very humbled to have received this award,” said Zimbelman. “The hard work of our kids continue to show year after year and this is due in no small part to the consistent support of our families and Salem-Keizer community.”
